Trout stocking delayed in Reddies river

The N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission has postponed the November delayed-harvest trout stocking for Reddies River in Wilkes County. The current water quality conditions in the river could hinder the survival of stocked fish, according to a commission news release.

The portion of Reddies River downstream of the city’s water supply reservoir was added to the commission’s Delayed Harvest Trout Waters Program in July 2008. The river was stocked with over 1,000 trout in October and additional trout stockings were scheduled for November, March, April and May.

In early October, North Wilkesboro informed the commission that the city would begin dredging operations in the reservoir upstream of the delayed-harvest section. The dredging has resulted in increased turbidity in the river to levels that could result in reduced survival of stocked trout.

The city of North Wilkesboro expects the dredging to take up to nine months to complete. Additional stockings planned for the delayed-harvest portion of Reddies River during 2009 may also be postponed. Fish stocking will resume once river conditions improve.  Continue Reading

Winkler’s Creek may angle wild trout status

By Scott Nicholson
Several local and regional waterways faced proposed fishing and designation changes under proposals by the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission.

The public-comment period on dozens of proposed changes to the state’s hunting and fishing rules began Monday and will continue through a series of public hearings in January.

A 1.6-mile section of Winkler’s Creek near Boone could receive a “Wild Trout Waters” designation. The creek serves as the town’s back-up municipal water supply, but the designation wouldn’t affect the town’s ability to draw water from the creek.

Lake drained after being stocked with 20,000 fish

The Associated Press
Town officials looking to do maintenance work on a dam and gate at Hope Mills Lake allowed the lake to be drained of water just two weeks after state biologists stocked it with 20,000 fish.

Town Manager Randy Beeman told the Fayetteville Observer he did not know about the fish when he approved the draining Monday. It’s not clear if any of the fish were lost, and Beeman wasn’t sure if the lake would be drained completely or left with a trickle of water.

“I don’t know who would make that decision to reintroduce (fish) knowing we were not in completion mode yet,” Beeman said. Crews were working to replace seals on a channel gate and apply epoxy to cracks in the dam wall.
